Inspired by the north coast of New South Wales, 'Where the Pandanus Grows' is as much about the pull of people as it is about place. Pandanus trees lean over the sand and brilliant blue water, while two tiny surfers make their way along the beach in the distance. Painted from memories of a coastline I return to often (a place entwined with family and a much-loved friend who lives that way) the work captures that familiar journey north, where some stretches of coast have come feel like markers of belonging. With the flourescent pink underpainting popping through in place i wanted to convey the joy of arriving somewhere that holds people you love, and the feeling that some places become part of us because of who is waiting there.
